In this Indie Game Devlog, I continue developing SILKROAD Project, a solo-developed Action Game built in Unreal Engine 5.
This month was entirely dedicated to combat design and game feel. Instead of adding major gameplay systems, I focused on refining the combat prototype by redesigning attack timings, expanding combo branches, improving combat rhythm, and giving every attack a clear purpose. The goal is to create a fast-paced character action combat system that rewards timing, mastery, and deliberate decision-making while still feeling satisfying for players who simply want to jump in and play.
I also implemented new charge attacks, anime-inspired cinematic finishers, additional combo routes, and continued iterating on the Hero and Spirit combat mechanics. Along the way, I discovered just how challenging it is to integrate cinematic sequences directly into gameplay, and why embracing technical constraints often leads to better game design.
SILKROAD Project is a single-player Action Game inspired by character action games, anime-style combat, and the history and cultures of the Silk Road. Fight alongside a powerful Spirit companion, master a dynamic dual-character combat system, explore a fantasy world inspired by Central Asia, and build relationships with travelers by managing your own guesthouse.
